Shivers…and Chicken Skin.
Heart wrenching performance. Phenomenal album too. He held his voice together for this performance,
Excellent!
LSD💧🎸💥
Amazing! Listen to Garth’s organ playing. Amazing
Richard sings with great emotion......
Amazing voice. RIP
Richard Manuel.. Too soon gone 🙏🏻🎹🎤🥁
❤❤❤❤❤
What a voice! And what he does with it. And then there is his musicianship....a master ...
I saw him sing this. So passionate
Those boys could really do it
No doubt about his greatness.
Van the Man! To me and everyone else in Winterland that Thanksgiving night, Van was the absolute highlight. When he did those series of high kicks during Turn up your Radio, the place went nuts more and more with each kick, driving The Band higher each time. They were digging it. It was stunning. Nobody else there got that reaction...a Very hard act to follow. You really had to be there. What a night. Thank you Bill Graham!
Fortunate to be a witness. God bless you, Lee.
Somehow I always come back to this performance. My only regret is I wasted years not listening to Levon.
Beautiful. I kinda' wish they had left out the strings though. They got in the way of Richard's great vocals. More space would have been nice.
one of my favorite singer
Manuel amico mio rip
hush is old
i heard this song one time
Never give up!
Richard could have been a great one man show had he lived a long life.
Just so much
The best.....
I too have been on a The Band kick. I have loved The Band since I first heard "Up on cripple Creek", when I was in my twenties and living in New York City. I had almost finished Robbie Robertson's book Testimony, when I heard he passed away. Since then I have been listening to many of their songs again, especially the one from "The Last Waltz", I like RIchard's voice, but my favorite is Rick Danko, especially his emotional and soulful "It makes no difference". Robbie was a great song writer and guitar player, but did not have a voice like Rick, Levon or Richard.
That was beautiful.
I can't believe they didn't include this recording in "The Last Waltz" it's incredible! Martin Scorcese also wanted to leave out Muddy Waters but wisely one cameraman didn't obey him and kept rolling capturing Muddy Waters incredible performance.
I've read all the cameras except for 1 was reloading film, Scorsese liked Muddy Waters.
@@TeleCaster66 No, Scorsese told them to turn off camera's to let them cool down but then freaked out when he heard how amazing Muddy was. You can see Scorsese halfway through his song in backround freaking out to make camera men to turn camera's on.
Richard is one of the all time great vocals. This and Ray Charles are my favorite versions. Any band would have given to have Richard, Levon or Rick singing in their band.
Does anyone notice that after Levon finishes the first song, Conan comes from a different side of the stage to thank Levon. I just realized that because Levon's back was to where Conan and the others were seated, and he would have had to get up and walk around the cameras, to the other side to see Levon performing.
Bobby Bland I'm sure Van Morrison hipped him to it
Their lyrics are the greatest,an english lesson,a lesson in america
Came back with his soul!
Way to gut it out after the cancer. ♥😎🥁🥁🥁
this is too painful to watch
Absolutely Fabulous.
Beautiful.
Oh, God, they all sound so messed up with. What?
This almost seems like a desecration of a perfectly good song. I like Van a lot. And God knows Richard Manuel had his day. C'mon, let's cut the shit. [Now, I have to go and look up the meaning of this old Irish hymn, I guess it's a hymn]
No, it's an old folk song, and there have been much sloppier versions than this. It served as a great intro for Van-- notice that unlike the others, he wasn't formally introduced by "Robertson", he just ambled onto the stage-- and it also paired him with his buddy Richard, they were two of a kind.
Americana music... close your eyes and see them marching down Bourbon St. Nuttin' else touches Levon and The Band.
rip rich
Can anyone tell what Van is telling Richard at 1:00? Sounds like 'go ahead sing it' or something
Or 'great singing'
1993? rick played to maybe 18 people at mc cabes in el ay.
Levon Helm is a national treasure! God bless him and his family.
Damn does he ever sound like Ray Charles here! What an amazing singer Richard was.
Kick ass performance and musicians
OMG,OMFG.... What's an honor it is to see the great Levon Helm being honored
A young Van Morrison with his parents popped into the Toronto bar where Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks- THE BAND were playing. He was amazed at the musicianship and as he was starting a group back home knew nothing short of their musicianship would be uncivilized. Yes the Canadian Stratford boy Richard Manuel keeps this song in the pocket. Look and listen how and the end of Last Waltz when all are singing, I Shall be Released it starts to fail then Richard really vocally brings it back in the pocket and to completion.
Was this recorded by any of the 35mm cameras?
No, Muddy Waters was suppose to get the same treatment as this but some wise cameraman said fukk that I'm catching Muddy Waters historical performance!
Garth’s keyboards….!
Garth and Richard should have gone on tour together after the Last Waltz! This is terrific!
